Wystawa węgierskich dzieł sztuki w PE

We wtorek, 1 marca br., Poseł Lidia Geringer de Oedenberg i Wiceprzewodnicząca PE Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou otworzyły tymczasową wystawę węgierskich dzieł sztuki w PE.

Hungarian Presidency in EU - art exhibition (01.03.2011)
Welcome speech by Lidia Geringer de Oedenberg, EP Quaestor

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As the Quaestor responsible for cultural events in the European Parliament, I have great pleasure to welcome you to the opening of the exhibition of Hungarian works of art. This exhibition aims not only to highlight the Hungarian cultural heritage and promote artists but falls in the context of the first Hungarian presidency of the European Union. From now on, every 6 months we will present here a part of the EP collection related to the particular rotating presidency of the EU. Soon, I will invite you to Polish and Danish exhibitions.

The 15 pieces of art you can admire today had been selected by Hungarian art experts. Later, they were approved by the EP Artistic Committee and the EP Bureau. Paintings and sculptures, acquired by our institution in 2008, constitute only one part of a broad EP art collection, which now comprises almost 500 elements. This collection is presented at the Parliament’s three places of work in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg and in its national information offices.

The tradition of purchasing and presenting contemporary artworks with the view to promoting the cultural output of the EU member states, was started by the President of the first directly elected European Parliament, Simone Veil. In 1980, she sought to emulate national parliaments’ long-standing practice of showing outstanding works of art.

Unfortunately, today the EP art collection remains largely unknown. That is why DG Communication and myself initiate new activities related to the promotion of our precious, hidden treasures, such as the creation of an online gallery. Also, I am happy to announce the collection will soon be complemented with new pieces of art from Bulgaria and Romania, completing the process of acquisition of artworks from all member states.

I very much hope that the exhibition will leave a lasting impression on you as it has on me.

Thank you for your attention.
